\u00a0The school year is almost over, and soon enough the students will be headed to *sniff* MIDDLE SCHOOL!!! \u00a0Time sure has flown by.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We had a pretty fantastic first day back. \u00a0The students were well rested (some so much so that they didn&#8217;t even want to wake up!) and ready to tackle some review.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This morning we started going over our big tests from last quarter. \u00a0We talked about some test taking strategies like eliminating answers that simply have incorrect information, and going back and re-reading sections to ensure we find evidence to support our\u00a0answer choice.<\/p>\n<p>We also started talking today about text structures. \u00a0Text structures (as the name would imply) describe how a text is put together; how it is structured. \u00a0Some examples include:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Chronological:<\/strong> <\/span>a text that is structured in chronological order. \u00a0Almost all stories are this way. \u00a0Another good non-fiction example is a biography.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Sequence:<\/strong> <\/span>\u00a0Very similar to chronological, but usually refers to things like recipes and instructions.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Cause and Effect:<\/strong><\/span> A way to structure a text that describes an effect, and its causes.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Problem and Solution:<\/strong> <\/span>Similar to cause and effect, but includes a solution to a problem. \u00a0Oftentimes this includes opinions.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Compare and Contrast:<\/strong><\/span> \u00a0Compares (finds similarities) and contrasts (finds differences) of two or more things.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tonight students have some short passages to look at, and some graphical organizers to fill out. \u00a0They should identify which text structure was utilized in each passage, and fill out the appropriate graphical organizer.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrpottersclassroom.com\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/TextStructures1.pdf\">TextStructures1<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In math we went over fractions and equivalent fractions, and took some notes (examples) of solving word problems involving fractions.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight students have some fraction word problems to solve. \u00a0I expect to see bar models or pictures, as well as each problem to be solved with a sentence. \u00a0I don&#8217;t want to see just 2\/4. \u00a0I want to see something like &#8220;Mr. Potter ate 2\/4 more of a brownie than Jon&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrpottersclassroom.com\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/FractionWordProblemExamples.pdf\">FractionWordProblemExamples<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrpottersclassroom.com\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Fraction-Word-Problems1.pdf\">Fraction Word Problems1<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Today we also did a little bit of a team building exercise called the Marshmallow Challenge. \u00a0 Make sure you ask your student about it, as it was quite interesting. \u00a0We&#8217;re going to give it another go tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>so, tl;dr<\/p>\n<p>Text structures are neat:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrpottersclassroom.com\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/TextStructures1.pdf\">TextStructures1<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Fraction word problems are also neat:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrpottersclassroom.com\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/FractionWordProblemExamples.pdf\">FractionWordProblemExamples<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrpottersclassroom.com\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Fraction-Word-Problems1.pdf\">Fraction Word Problems1<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Reading is also neat!!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Have a good one,<\/p>\n<p>-Mr. Potter<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>4th quarter has begun!! \u00a0Can you believe it?
