A reminder: This Thursday, September 1st is our first APTT meeting. \u00a0I would really love an opportunity to talk with you about our students and their progress. \u00a0APTT gives us a great chance to look at data and talk about student achievement. \u00a0I hope everyone is able to make it.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This morning we continued our talk about decimals. \u00a0We discussed \u00a0again how decimals are just another way to describe fractions in base 10. \u00a0We have been breaking out the play money and doing a lot of our work with decimals using the manipulatives. \u00a0Honestly students have been doing work with decimals for years when they use money, just nobody told them about it.<\/p>\n

Tonight students have a set of decimal numbers to look at. \u00a0They should look at each underlined digit and give me THREE ways to describe the value of that digit.<\/p>\n

For example if I had 3.62<\/span><\/p>\n

The digit 2 is underlined. I can describe its value in these three simple ways:<\/p>\n

2 tenths, OR 2\/10 OR 0.02<\/p>\n

It’s important students cement this idea that everything to the right of the decimal point is describing a fractional value that is smaller than 1.<\/p>\n

We also talked about how we can solve some of the more challenging multiplication problems on our homework and quizzes lately. \u00a0Essentially we are solving for unknown values in equations when we have an answer and some known values. \u00a0It’s pretty neat stuff, and should be some interesting logic puzzles for the students. \u00a0We went over strategies for this today and took some notes in our math journal. \u00a0We then copied down four of these types of problems. \u00a0Tonight students should finish these in their math journal.<\/p>\n

In Language Arts we started discussing our Greek and Latin roots notebook. \u00a0This is a book that students will be using to record our weekly vocabulary work. \u00a0Students received a list of vocabulary words today based on the root ‘ped’. \u00a0Tonight, they are responsible for creating vocabulary squares for the first five words. \u00a0We did the first word as an example:<\/p>\n

Finally, we did some observations of our seeds. \u00a0These things are getting big quickly, and we hopefully will get them transplanted fast.<\/p>\n
