Today we started talking about mental math, and some strategies we can utilize when adding numbers mentally.<\/p>\n
I know that addition is combining terms. \u00a0This means I can break apart those terms as I see fit and combine them in any way that would make it easy on myself.<\/p>\n
For example a simple problem like 9 + 7<\/p>\n
I can see that my answer is going to be larger than 10. \u00a0So I try to make a ten easily first. \u00a0I know that 9 is one away from ten. \u00a0This means I\u2019m going to break up my 7 into a 1, and a 6.<\/p>\n
So my problem goes from<\/p>\n
9 + 7<\/p>\n
to<\/p>\n
9 + 1 + 6<\/p>\n
10 + 6<\/p>\n
16<\/p>\n
This is a good strategy for students to have when adding numbers, and one of many we will be working on.<\/p>\n
