Today we started talking about multiplying fractions, and what that would look like as a word problem\/in real life.<\/p>\n
We talked about how if it was 3 miles around a lake, and we walked around it 5 times, the total amount we walked would be 3 x 5 = 15 miles.<\/p>\n
If the distance was 3\/4 of a mile and we walked around it 5 times, the total amount walked would be 3\/4 x 5, or 15\/4 miles.<\/p>\n
If the distance was 3\/4 of a mile and we walked around it 1\/5 of a time, the total walked would be 3\/4 x 1\/5, or 3\/20 of a mile.<\/p>\n

Just because we are doing something less than once, does not mean that we are not multiplying. \u00a0This can be very confusing for students to start, but we will be exploring this and doing much more practice with it.<\/p>\n

Tonight students have a set of fraction word problems to do. \u00a0They should model these with bar models. \u00a0The first two problems we did together as practice:<\/p>\n
FractionWordProblemsMarch9<\/a><\/p>\n <\/p>\n In Language Arts we took a VERY large chunk of time and I finished the Mysterious Benedict Society #2 as I had promised the children I would. \u00a0It’s a great series of books, and I hope they are interested enough to find and read the 3rd one on their own.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n We also took a look back at similes and metaphors. \u00a0Some of us were making mistakes, thinking that only similes compared things. \u00a0In fact both of these kinds of figurative language compare things. \u00a0Similes do it with like or as, and metaphors do it without.<\/p>\n Tonight students have one last batch of practice before a quick quiz on this tomorrow:<\/p>\n MetaphorOrSimile<\/a><\/p>\n <\/p>\n Students also received a new list of vocabulary words, dealing with the root spec:<\/p>\n Inspect<\/p>\n Speculate<\/p>\n Perspective<\/p>\n Spectacle<\/p>\n Introspection<\/p>\n Spectator<\/p>\n circumspect<\/p>\n retrospective<\/p>\n spectacles<\/p>\n respect<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Tonight students should use each of these words correctly in a sentence. \u00a0They also received a vocabulary sort that they should have cut out and can use for practicing meanings.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n And before you knew it, we were out of time \ud83d\ude41<\/p>\n <\/p>\n so, tl;dr:<\/p>\n Fraction multiplication word problems:\u00a0FractionWordProblemsMarch9<\/a><\/p>\n Simile or metaphor?\u00a0MetaphorOrSimile<\/a><\/p>\n One sentence per vocabulary word<\/p>\n as always, read for 35 minutes!<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Have a good one,<\/p>\n <\/p>\n -Mr. Potter<\/p>\n <\/p>\n P.S.
