{"id":867,"date":"2015-05-18T19:50:57","date_gmt":"2015-05-18T19:50:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mrpottersclassroom.com\/cms\/?p=867"},"modified":"2015-05-18T19:50:57","modified_gmt":"2015-05-18T19:50:57","slug":"homework-may-18-mon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.mrpottersclassroom.com\/cms\/?p=867","title":{"rendered":"Homework May 18 (Mon)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So much to do, and so little time!<\/p>\n<p>We started our day taking a quick word problem assessment. \u00a0We seem to have figured out (mostly) adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions. \u00a0However figuring out word problems continues to elude many of us. \u00a0This is a reading comprehension problem more than anything, but \u00a0the majority of assessments (including the eog) are going to be nothing but pages of word problems from here on out.<\/p>\n<p>In order to get ready for the EOG, we have a packet of review problems to start. \u00a0Tonight students should do the first four pages:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrpottersclassroom.com\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/CC-5th-grade-word-problems.pdf\">CC-5th-grade-word-problems<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Next we talked more about writing out equations with unknown quantities. \u00a0We talked about basic algebra, and how we can group like terms, and unknowns. \u00a0We took notes on solving basic equations involving variables using bar models and our knowledge of how equality works. \u00a0Tonight students have two problems to solve by writing an equation and solving for an unknown. \u00a0Here are the notes and problems:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrpottersclassroom.com\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/WordProblemsWithUnknowns.pdf\">WordProblemsWithUnknowns<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In Language Arts we talked more about analyzing poems, and discovering the author&#8217;s message. \u00a0We are getting very good at identifying similes and metaphors. \u00a0Now we just need to work on interpreting what they mean and what the author is trying to tell us. \u00a0On Saturday we spent a good amount of time analyzing Katy Perry&#8217;s &#8220;Firework&#8221;. \u00a0You&#8217;d be surprised at just how many poetic devices are in use in that song.<\/p>\n<p>Tonight students have a poem to read and think about, along with some questions to answer:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrpottersclassroom.com\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/AnalyzingPoetryMay18.pdf\">AnalyzingPoetryMay18<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Students also received a new vocabulary list containing words that use &#8216;rupt&#8217;. \u00a0Tonight they should write a STORY using the first five words on the list. \u00a0This should not be simply five sentences that use the words. \u00a0It should be an actual short story that incorporates the first 5 words:<\/p>\n<p>abrupt<\/p>\n<p>bankrupt<\/p>\n<p>corrupt<\/p>\n<p>corruptible<\/p>\n<p>disrupt<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>At this point, we went into the computer lab and typed up some more of our poetry. \u00a0I am REALLY impressed with how well everyone is doing on this. \u00a0They are coming up with some fantastic ideas when it comes to typing out their poetry and adding things to it. \u00a0I can&#8217;t wait until these are done.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>so, tl;dr<\/p>\n<p>first four pages:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrpottersclassroom.com\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/CC-5th-grade-word-problems.pdf\">CC-5th-grade-word-problems<\/a><\/p>\n<p>These two algebra problems using bar modeling:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrpottersclassroom.com\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/WordProblemsWithUnknowns.pdf\">WordProblemsWithUnknowns<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Write a story using the first 5 &#8216;rupt&#8217; words on our vocab list<\/p>\n<p>read this poem, answer these questions:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrpottersclassroom.com\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/AnalyzingPoetryMay18.pdf\">AnalyzingPoetryMay18<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>and as always, read!<\/p>\n<p>(I forgot to hand out new reading logs, doh)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Have a good one!<\/p>\n<p>-Mr. Potter<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>BIG P.S.:<\/p>\n<p>Today students got a handout giving the run-down on what is happening on Friday. \u00a0Please make sure you see this, and if you have any questions, please send me an e-mail or give me a call.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So much to do, and so little time!
