{"id":993,"date":"2015-08-12T19:48:33","date_gmt":"2015-08-12T19:48:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mrpottersclassroom.com\/cms\/?p=993"},"modified":"2015-08-12T19:50:41","modified_gmt":"2015-08-12T19:50:41","slug":"homework-aug-12-wed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.mrpottersclassroom.com\/cms\/?p=993","title":{"rendered":"Homework Aug 12 (Wed)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wednesday already?! \u00a0Where does our time go?!<\/p>\n<p>This morning we began thinking about the story we are going to write. \u00a0We brought out the character trait sheet that we had done on our main character, and then got out one of the story maps we have been working with this week.<\/p>\n<p>We talked about how we could use the story map to help us ensure we are including all of the elements in our own story.<\/p>\n<p>Next students started filling in the map with ideas for their story. \u00a0Tonight they should finish filling this out.<\/p>\n<p>Who is going to be in their story? \u00a0Fill in the characters<\/p>\n<p>Where\/when is the story taking place? \u00a0Setting<\/p>\n<p>What are the main events? plot<\/p>\n<p>What is the problem\/conflict the characters will face? conflict<\/p>\n<p>What will be our message or what we want the reader to take from our story be? theme<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrpottersclassroom.com\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Blank-char-sheet.pdf\">Blank char sheet<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrpottersclassroom.com\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/StoryElements.pdf\">StoryElements<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We then talked a LOT more about producers and consumers.\u00a0 Not everyone understood the very important point that last night&#8217;s reading was trying to make: \u00a0plants and animals (producers and consumers) depend upon each other for survival. \u00a0Plants produce food, and oxygen for us. \u00a0We produce carbon dioxide for them.<\/p>\n<p>We watched a quick <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=SdzWfOEfbS0\">Bill Nye Video on plants<\/a>. \u00a0Tonight students should fill out a little worksheet about the video:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrpottersclassroom.com\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/BillNyePlants.pdf\">BillNyePlants<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We read a lot more of The Mysterious Benedict Society, and things are really getting interesting as the kids are about to become secret agents at a mysterious school, from which devious signals are originating.<\/p>\n<p>One of the students even tried to sneak the book off my desk and take a look ahead!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Finally, we talked about solving word problems. \u00a0I ask that students begin solving word problems in a certain manner. \u00a0Eventually we&#8217;ll get some freedom in how we solve them, but for now I would like them to follow my simple formula.<\/p>\n<p>Read the problem. \u00a0If you need to, underline important information, circle the question, etc.<\/p>\n<p><em>Tell me HOW to solve the problem. \u00a0DO NOT tell me something like &#8220;34 + 15&#8221;. \u00a0There should be no numbers. \u00a0Instead say something like<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;First add how many apples Jim had to how many apples Dan had.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>Next do the operations. \u00a0NOW we are actually doing \u00a034 + 15. \u00a0Make sure you have labels. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>3<\/em>4 apples + 15 apples = 49 apples.<\/p>\n<p><em>Next, tell me what that means. \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This tells us how many apples they had altogether<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Tonight students have a sheet of word problems. \u00a0They only need to do the first 5 problems. \u00a0They should do these on a separate sheet of paper. \u00a0Included are the first 2 problems we did together, and the start of the third. \u00a0These should serve as examples as to how the problems should be laid out and solved.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrpottersclassroom.com\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/WordProblemsAug12.pdf\">WordProblemsAug12<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>so, tl;dr<\/p>\n<p>Story map about the story you will be writing:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrpottersclassroom.com\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/StoryElements.pdf\">StoryElements<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bill Nye video sheet<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrpottersclassroom.com\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/BillNyePlants.pdf\">BillNyePlants<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Word problems, done as the examples:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mrpottersclassroom.com\/cms\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/WordProblemsAug12.pdf\">WordProblemsAug12<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>and as always, read read read!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Have a good one,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>-Mr. Potter<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wednesday already?! \u00a0Where does our time go?!
