Homework Feb 27th (Thurs)

REMINDER:  Tomorrow is group picture day.  Students took home another order form for these group  pictures on Wednesday.  If you would like one, the order form was in their Monday folder, or they can simply bring in 10 dollars per picture and I will reciept it to them.  Checks should be made payable to Strawbridge Studios inc.

Whew!  Today was super busy.  We were doing things straight up until the bell.  There are just not enough hours in the day.

We did a LOT of work today with equivalent fractions, and how they can help us add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators.  We also did a tremendous amount of pair work, and the students are getting much better at explaining concepts to each other.

In order to get in a lot of this practice, students have two worksheets to do, adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators.

AddingFractionsFeb27

SubtractingFractionsFeb27

They MUST show their work, which means show what equivalent fractions they used, and how they converted their fractions (by multiplying by a form of 1) and what form of one they used.  This should not be news to the students.

In Language arts, we are wrapping up our time with The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.  I will miss this book, as it has really sparked some fantastic discussions here.  Today we even had students listening into and trying to talk into OTHER groups’ discussions with their own opinions.

Students also posted their opinion on the messageboard of who is the main character.  We have some fairly varied responses and justifications in there.  If you would like, please feel free to go have a look at what your child thinks.

We had a frank discussion also today as to what constitutes a post of substance, and what constitutes noise on the messageboard.  For the most part I believe the students took the talk to heart, and I have seen some improvements already.

For Language Arts tonight, students should finish, and then write a two paragraph reader’s response to The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.  Stories often detail the growth or downfall of characters.  Their response should be to focus on a character from the book, and tell how that character changed from the beginning of the book to the end.  Their response should include traits of their chosen character at the beginning of the book (with proof!) and then traits that changed at the end of the book for that character (with proof again!).  This is due tomorrow, and will be submitted for a grade.

We then went right to the bell in science, as groups presented their findings to questions such as “what makes a rolling ball stop?” and “which falls faster, a bowling ball or a marble?”.   The ability of the students to work collaboratively in groups is improving daily it seems, and I am quite pleased with their presentations today.

As always, the tldr;

Two math worksheets:

SubtractingFractionsFeb27

AddingFractionsFeb27

One two-paragraph paper detailing the changes one character from TLTW&TW underwent from beginning to end.  The paper should include proof/examples from the text that support your claims.

I hope everyone has a good evening, and look forward to seeing you all tomorrow!

Homework Feb 26th (Wed)

Today was a day straight out of the twilight zone!

We had some problems with talking out and following directions today.  We had been doing very very well lately, so today was a bit of a shock.

We also had some trouble with students copying down their centers correctly, and we had traffic jams all over the place moving around the room.  It was chaos, but hopefully tomorrow will go much smoother!

In math, we talked more about equivalent fractions, and what we can use them for.  Today we focused on how equivalent fractions can aid us when we are adding fractions.  Since it is difficult to add fractions when they have unlike denominators, we can find equivalent fractions with like denominators, and then we can add them easily.

In that vein, tonight’s homework is an adding fractions worksheet.  Students must still show me what form of one they are multiplying or dividing by in order to find equivalent fractions.

AddingFractionsFeb26

In language arts, we played a Smartboard game identifying similes and metaphors.  The students got a *little* excited about that one.  Ask them about it……if you dare.  I hope we can eventually add similes and metaphors to our own writing, so tonight students are asked to finish a simile worksheet where they write their own similes.

WritingSimilesFeb26

We had good discussions today about The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.  Who is the main character of this book, really?  Are there good guys and bad guys?  Hopefully we can come up with some kind of answer for these questions as we finish up the book this week.  Tonight students should have at least read through chapter 15.

Today I also passed out your student’s login and password information for our messageboard.  We talked about posting to it, and what is and is not appropriate.  If you would also have a talk with your student about what you consider appropriate behavior in a public venue like an internet messageboard, I would be much obliged.

The students posted a simple hello message in our general chat, and made sure that their forum was visible to only themselves.  After looking at what our students have posted, I may have to disable smileys on our site.  Just…..so…..many…….smileys.  We will definitely have a talk about that tomorrow, as well as revisiting what makes a decent post, and what is just essentially noise.  This looks to be a real learning experience for many of our students.

I have not populated the individual forums with their homework and grades yet because I wanted to make sure the settings were correct and nobody could see another person’s sub-forum.  I will now start filling them in with daily homework updates, and grades.  It will take a few days to get caught up with what we have done so far, so I beg your indulgence.

Please also make sure your student understands that this login and password are for themselves and you the parents ONLY.  If you discover your student knows another student’s login and password or has told their login and password to another student, please let me know immediately.

As always, the tldr;

Thanks, and I will see everyone tomorrow!

Homework Feb 25th (Tues)

Hello all,

Since we did not quite get to everything yesterday due to some mis-communication on my part, I am essentially making yesterday’s homework tonight’s homework.  Sorry about that!

Today we talked about equivalent fractions, and why we might want to express a fraction in a simplified form, or with a different denominator.  Essentially simplified fractions are usually easier to understand and visualize for us.  It can be easier to see in our minds something like 1/2 as opposed to 34/68.  It might also make fractions easier to compare.

For instance, let’s pretend that you were offered either 1 piece from a pizza that was cut into 4 equal pieces, or 2 pieces from a pizza that was cut into 7 equal pieces.  So essentially you were offered 1/4th of a pizza or 2/7ths of a pizza.  Which do you choose?

It might be difficult to visualize which is larger or smaller in this case.  But we can find equivalent fractions for 1/4 and 2/7 so that they both have common denominators, or have been split into the same number of pieces.

In order to do this, we can find a common denominator that we can convert each of our fractions into.  In this case we chose 28 as our common denominator.

In order to convert 1/4 to 28ths, we multiply by a form of one.  If you remember, multiplying by 1 will not change the value of a number.  The form of one we chose was 7/7, as this will give us a fraction with a denominator of 28.  If we multiply 1/4 by 7/7 we end up with 7/28.

So 1/4 = 7/28

In the same vein, we multiply 2/7 by 4/4, and find that 2/7 is equivalent to 8/28

So 2/7 = 8/28

We would want, therefore, to take the 2 pieces!

*whew* if you’re still reading this, kudos to you.

In science, we are talking about motion, and forces.  We had a very interesting discussion today about what let’s us move about on the Earth, and why we would NOT be able to move about quite so easily in space.

Space is not like swimming, where you can push on the water to propel yourself.  In space, there’s nothing to ‘push’ against to move yourself forward.  Without that force, you’d just be stuck in one spot, forever!

So we have two worksheets, dealing with equivalent fractions, and then using equivalent fractions to convert fractions to decimals (hint: convert it to x/100 first!).

As always, we have our 35 minutes of reading, and they should have read up through chapter 14 by tomorrow in The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.  We will finish it by the end of this week!

We actually finished the personification worksheet in class, so no worries about that.

Homework Feb 24th (Mon)

DISREGARD THIS POST please.  I apologize.  I just got in touch with the substitute and apparently things did not go quite as I had planned today.  There is no homework due tomorrow.  These will likely be due Wednesday.

Many apologies, as I had a bit of a family emergency today and was therefore unable to get to school.  I hope to come back tomorrow and hear good things from our substitute, Ms. Walker!

The homework for tonight was to read chapter 14 in The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, as well as three worksheets.  Two math worksheets, working with equivalent fractions, and one worksheet asking students to identify personification and create some of their own.  We will be working quite a bit with figurative language throughout this semester.

Please remember that we are still using the identity property to find our equivalent fractions, and you must show me what form of one you used!

Looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow

Homework Feb 21st

Today was a fantastically fun filled day of assessment!

Students started their day reviewing the mathematical concepts we have been working on.  Simplifying fractions and multiplying fractions have been, and will continue to be, our focus for a bit.

After that, we went to the computer lab and took our Star test.  We followed that up with some Dreambox Math.

Next, we took a Math assessment.

And then, a Language Arts assessment!

If you hear groans and moans tonight, that is why!

We had indoor recess today, and with a lack of things to do, many students turned to our unifix cubes and started building things.  We have some really creative minds here.  Some students built towers and toy tops, but one student built something a little different:

Do you know what flag this is?

Flag

In Science, we’re working on forces and motion.   We watched a video today about the rides at Disney World and the imagineers that work there.  Ask your child if they remember what a force is (a push or a pull on an object).  If you’re feeling super adventurous, ask your child what force is at work that brings an object in motion to rest (friction).

There’s no real homework for the weekend, except students should continue reading each night for 35 minutes and fill out their reading log, and sometime this weekend be sure they have read up through chapter 13 in The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Homework Feb 20th

We had a very good day today.  Everyone is up in arms over whether or not bad deeds a bad person make, or that there are always extenuating circumstances.  We got so heated we just had to create a Padlet so everyone could share their ideas.  Feel free to go there and see what your student and the others had to say!

What’s your opinion?

For homework today, students should do their 35 minutes of reading, including chapter 12 of the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.  A few students have not kept up, and have unfortunately been left out of our discussions as of late.

Students should also be ready to turn in a COMPLETE rough draft of their fantasy story, beginning to end.

Finally we have two metaphor sheets that will be due tomorrow.  Similes and metaphors!  We may or may not have an assessment on this tomorrow! *HINT* *HINT*

MetaphorHomeworkFeb20

It’s a lite day, but I really need to have that rough draft completed and turned in tomorrow.    See you all tomorrow!

Homework Feb 19th

We are getting back into the swing of things!  Always nice to actually be at school on a Wednesday!  Been a while since we had that.

As always, we have our 35 minutes of reading and reading log tonight.  For at least some of that, students should read chapter 11 in The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.

We had a very lively discussion yesterday and today about whether doing bad things (like Edmund does) necessarily makes you a bad person, or whether there are mitigating circumstances.  The students were very animated with their answers.  It was a lot of fun.  We might have to do a journal response so that students can get their ideas out.

The students should think ahead, as a full rough draft of their fantasy story is due on Friday.  I will read these over the weekend and offer some feedback on Monday.  Therefore it is IMPERATIVE that students have a full rough copy to hand in to me Friday.

In math, we are working on multiplying fractions, and exactly what that means.  We are focusing on the idea that multiplying by a fraction can mean taking a fraction (less than a whole) of something else.  So we are interpreting an equation like 1/2 x 1/2 as taking one half of one half.  We have been modeling this with bar models, as using circles and pies can get messy and difficult to read.  This is by no means the ONLY thing that an equation like that can mean, but it is our starting point.

To demonstrate their understanding of this possible interpretation, students should write a story problem for the equation 1/3 x 3/4, and turn this in, solved, tomorrow.

Finally, we just started our work on figurative language, and students have two simile worksheets to finish tonight as well.  Remember that similes are when we use ‘like’ or ‘as’ to compare two things.

That was long, here’s the tldr;

2 simile worksheets

Homework Feb 18th

Today we have a bit lighter load.

We first have our 35 minutes of reading as always.

For part of that, students should read chapter 10 in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.

Today in class, students did some peer groups, where students TAG each other:

Tell something they liked

Ask a question

Give a suggestion

Students wrote their peer’s suggestions on the back of their first page of their writing.  We then shared the suggestions to ensure they made sense and were doable.

Tonight, students should re-write at least one paragraph of their writing, focusing on the recommendation from their peers.

Finally, students have a multiplying fractions worksheet.  This sheet asks students to answer in lowest terms (simplify).  They should therefore multiply the fractions, and then simplify them.

If students need the sheet it is given below, with the first problem done.  If you need to help your student with the homework, please focus on the fact that when simplifying, we are really dividing by 1.  When we divide by 1, we don’t change the value of our fraction, we simply change the form of the number.  When we divide by 2/2 we are simply dividing by a form of the number 1.

MathHwkFeb18

Homework Feb 17th

Today we have a good bit of homework due to all of the missed days and makeup work.

Students should read chapters 7 and 8 in the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe.  This should easily cover their reading log time, which I remind you is to be 35 minutes each night.  I know many students who are definitely reading but forget to get this log signed on a nightly basis.  Please double check your student’s log if you get a chance.

We have two mathematics worksheets to do.  One is a multiplying fractions worksheet.  On this sheet, there are a number of fraction multiplication problems.  Students have been told that simply answering the problems is not enough; they must draw a square fractional representation of their answer.

The second worksheet is a worksheet on simplifying fractions.  Students again may not simply give an answer.  They must provide what form of one they divided by in order to simplify their fraction.  For instance when simplifying 6/8, they would write 6/8 ÷ (2/2) = 3/4.  We have been working on the identity properties of one for multiplication and division, and simplifying fractions is our first stepping stone towards exploring equivalent fractions utilizing these properties.

Finally, students have been asked to come in tomorrow with at least one page of their fantasy story written.  They came up with “somebody wanted but so” diagrams to outline their stories last week, and they will be spending the next week fleshing out and writing their stories.  This page does not have to be something painstakingly revised and edited.  It simply needs to be a good start to their story.  We will take care of the editing and revising in class in small groups and peer groups.

We have a lot to catch up on, but hopefully with your support and your student’s hard work, we can get back on track!
