Today we have a good bit of homework due to all of the missed days and makeup work.
Students should read chapters 7 and 8 in the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. This should easily cover their reading log time, which I remind you is to be 35 minutes each night. I know many students who are definitely reading but forget to get this log signed on a nightly basis. Please double check your student’s log if you get a chance.
We have two mathematics worksheets to do. One is a multiplying fractions worksheet. On this sheet, there are a number of fraction multiplication problems. Students have been told that simply answering the problems is not enough; they must draw a square fractional representation of their answer.
The second worksheet is a worksheet on simplifying fractions. Students again may not simply give an answer. They must provide what form of one they divided by in order to simplify their fraction. For instance when simplifying 6/8, they would write 6/8 ÷ (2/2) = 3/4. We have been working on the identity properties of one for multiplication and division, and simplifying fractions is our first stepping stone towards exploring equivalent fractions utilizing these properties.
Finally, students have been asked to come in tomorrow with at least one page of their fantasy story written. They came up with “somebody wanted but so” diagrams to outline their stories last week, and they will be spending the next week fleshing out and writing their stories. This page does not have to be something painstakingly revised and edited. It simply needs to be a good start to their story. We will take care of the editing and revising in class in small groups and peer groups.
We have a lot to catch up on, but hopefully with your support and your student’s hard work, we can get back on track!
